  1. Our marathon drive from Houston to Daingerfield is complete. We left Houston at 10pm last night and got to the lake house at approximately 7pm tonight driving straight through, taking bathroom breaks on the side of the road. Our average speed was approximately 5-10 miles per hour, bumper-to-bumper stop and go from Houston to Lufkin stretching the normally 5 hour trip to around 20. 80% of gas stations along the way are closed due to lack of supply. You could tell the ones with gas left by the line of cars, typically 20-30 deep. Gas prices were surprisingly sane, however; no price gouging that I noticed. The local radio stations (mostly country, welcome to East Texas) did a great job of coverage, relaying closures, open gas stations and the status of contra-flow lanes (opening up inbound lanes to outbound traffic). News reports estimate close to 1 million on the roads with us yesterday, leaving 3 million still in Houston. Rita seems to be veering towards Louisiana, but we’re still in for a ride from the looks of it. Clinger and a few others are holing up at home. Will update with status when we hear anything. Cellphones are slammed. Verizon is giving out a “this phone number cannot be reached due to Hurricane message” Great guys, real helpful. We’re safe and planning on spending the hurricane cooking smores, watching DVDs and hunting beavers, but we’ll post updates when we hear anything.
