Learning Hungarian

Well, I am learning Hungarian. I think I know maybe even a little more than Spanish now. Many say, “why are you learning Hungarian? You’ll never use it when you come back to the States and everyone at work speaks English!” Well, I know… but who knows really how long I’ll be here and seriously, when you live in another country, it is quite helpful to know the language. So I am trying. :) …but it’s hard. In fact, today, I was talking with one of the Hungarians at work about how difficult a language it is - the structure is just WAY different than English, Spanish, French or German. It is just very very different. The guy I was talking this over with said, “BUT, if you can learn Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and all the Asia Pacific languages will be much easier to learn!” lol - uuuuuuhhh… ok. That doesn’t really actually give me MORE incentive. heehee - good try though. :)

Everything DOES Happen for a Reason

Over the weekend, my friend Valerie had introduced me to this AWESOME gouda cheese with cumin in it that was soooo delicious. Some peeps at work were headin’ to a nearby mall for lunch and I knew there was a cheese store at this mall, so I went. Ate at the Subway Subway IS in Budapest and then stopped real quick and to my wonderful surprise, they did have my cheese. Sweet. They cut off a large, long, flat piece of cheese for me (odd shape for cheese - yes) but I was happy. I had a meeting right up until the moment I needed to leave for my Hungarian lesson so I ran to grab my cheese and was pleasantly surprised to find that that odd, flat shaped cheese fit nicely in my laptop bag, right flat on top of the laptop! Brandi and I were rushing to the metro, and as we entered the station we saw we were just about to miss it. People don’t really rush for the metro here, but none-the-less we picked up the pace to see if we could make it. I noticed that someone near to the door saw us coming, and put their foot in it to keep it from closing (see the Hungarians are really nice people!!). I’ll have you know that I know why people don’t rush here ‘cause man, if you got yourself stuck when that doorway slammed that could cause some injury! Anyway… we just barely slipped through the door but UUUUUK - my computer!!! Though Brandi and I made it through the doors my laptop bag did not: SLAM! The doors closed shut square on my computer!! Now, don’t stress… the computer is fine… but do you know WHY it’s fine? That big block of cheese that I’d purchased earlier gave the computer some nice padding for that horrible incident! The cheese saved the day!!! haha - who would have thought?! :)

Speaking of the metro…
For an American, in general, the idea of public transport is quite foreign. Really only do we have good public transportation on the East Coast and really, really large cities. None of these areas have I ever lived in before. So this is a new concept for me to not be in charge of my own transportation. I like it! I never have to worry about parking, tolls, gasoline, drinking too much, carrying my drivers license, insurance… man, lots of reasons. There are always lots of strange, unusual people on the metros though. And it’s always a bit of an akward situation. I mean, there you are, sitting around for a good 15 minutes in a cabin with 50 other strangers just starin’ at each other. AKWARD. And everyone is looking around at everyone else. What else is there to do? There are the occasional readers… but those people are only the ones who have a veeeeery long ride. The other day, I was sitting there thinking… man, there are some really odd looking people here in Hungary. All different shapes, sizes, odd, odd faces. Wow - Hungarians are strange. But then… I thought… wait… you know, when I am in the States, how often do I just get to sit around with 50 complete strangers?? And sitting on Katy freeway with 50 cars in a traffic jam isn’t the same thing. If I took those same people and lined ‘em up with these Hungarians, I bet they’d be just as odd. For sure. All people are ‘weird’. Just ‘cause we’re not the same. But… that’s what makes us wonderful… yeah… not weird… wonderful… :)

Wish I had some pictures of the metro to share with you… but I just can’t bring myself to take a picture of strangers on the metro…. people might think I’m….. weird. ;)
